Contributor's Guidelines

Genesee Country is a quarterly, regional magazine covering the Finger Lakes and Western New York. We are always looking for freelance writers, photographers, illustrators and story ideas.

All material submitted must pertain to the Genesee Country
The region encompasses 17 counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

We publish local history, personality and town profiles, B&Bs, day trips, Genesee Country vignettes & opinion in our regular departments. We need ideas for day trips for our Destinations department and interesting people (men and women) for Just Folks. Day trips should be family oriented, which means entertaining for children. Destinations writers should take good photographs/slides. We'd like to print good fiction (1600 max.) and humor (make us laugh!)

We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts
Query in writing (one page) with clips to: Attention GC Editor. Include phone number in all correspondence. Responds in 4 weeks if SASE is included; sample copy $4; We want freelancers who can write a good lead, organize well, and make it exciting! We like writers who are also good photographers.

If the material is printed electronically, the author will receive full online credit, his/her e-mail address listing on the web page and a hotlink to a personal web page if applicable; pays 10 cents per published word upon publication. Photographs/slides/illustrations
We often have need for nature and historic photos/slides. We need seasonal color photos for our covers depicting spring, summer, autumn and winter. We can use B&W and color prints and 35 mm slides. digital cameras generally do not produce high enough quality images, but call if you want to try. Query us with photo essay ideas. We are not responsible for unlabeled slides or prints. Please write your name ON EACH slide/photograph submitted and identify the content. This also proves valuable in determining photo credit. We pay photographers $20 per photo/slide used inside; $50 for a cover shot.

Deadline for assigned stories are approximately:
·March1 for Spring issue (Home & Garden)
·May1 for Summer issue (Fiction)
·July 1 for Autumn issue
·Oct.1 for Holiday issue
You will be notified if there is a change in deadline when the assignment is made.

· July 1 for events happening in late September, October and early November (Autumn issue)
· Sept. 15 for events happening in Nov., Dec., Jan., Feb. and early March. (Winter issue).
