The Lake & Valley Clarion was recognized as one of the best small weekly newpapers in New York State in the 1999 Better Newspaper contest, sponsored by the New York State Press Association. The Clarion took awards in seven categories including third place in the prestigious Past President's Award for General Excellence, among weekly newspapers with a paid circulation of less than 4,000. Judges in that category cited the paper's "good use of color on the front page and aggressive news reporting."
The Clarion received 3 first-place awards for best Editorial Cartoon, Best Graphic Illustration, and Best Multi-Advertiser Pages; a second-place award for Best Special Section Cover; and two other third-place awards for Coverage of the Environment and Best Obituaries.
The highly competitive competition drew over 3,000 entries from more than 160 papers of all sizes across the state.
