Betty J. Parks
(Wheeler - Williams)

Betty J. Parks, 79, died on Jan. 9, 2003 at the Bridges of Mendon in Mendon, N.Y. She was born on Nov. 11, 1923 in Avon, the daughter of Herbert P. Wheeler and Jessie (Williams) Wheeler. She was a member of the East Avon Presbyterian Church She visited nursing homes in her spare time and loved flower arranging, writing letters and canning. She was predeceased by her husband Ward J. Parks in 1999. She is survived by two daughters, JoAnn Boyce of Avon and Cathy E. Parks of Tacoma, Wash.; three sons, Keith (Donna) Parks of Avon, Stephen (Shirley) Parks of Henrietta, James (Janice) Parks of Atlanta, N.Y.; two foster sons, Gerald Walker of Waterloo, N.Y. and Robert (Amy) Walker of Phelps, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at the Mendon United Presbyterian Church, Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. Spring interment, Evergreen Cemetery at Baptist Hill. Contributions may be made to the Mendon Presbyterian Church, 3886 Rush-Mendon Rd., Mendon NY 14506 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton OH 44720 in her memory. Arrangements by the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc. in Avon.

Velma Winter Mahoney

Velma Winter Mahoney, 89, of 5249 Upper Mt. Morris Road in Leicester, died Jan. 17, 2003 at the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility in Geneseo. She was born the daughter of Charles E. and Mary (Frank) Winter on March 11, 1913 in Perry. She retired from the Leicester Post office as Postmaster in 1976 after more than 25 years of service, serving as a clerk for 22 years and Postmaster for two years. She was a member of St. Thomas-Aquinas Church in Leicester where she was a member of the Rosary Society. She was also the Leicester Town and Village Historian and was a member of the Livingston County Historical Society. She was very devoted to her family and had many dear friends through her love and knowledge of genealogy. She is survived by her three children, Robert (Barbara) Mahoney of Leicester, Patricia (Roy) Stewart of Piffard and Chris (Carol) Mahoney of Leicester; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Carlton “Pat” in 1988 and her daughter Mary Louise Mahoney in 1937. Friends called Monday at the John W. Martin Funeral Home, 37 Chapel St., Mt. Morris where prayers were said Tuesday followed by a funeral mass at St. Thomas-Aquinas Church in Leicester. Burial in Leicester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.

John C. Slagle

John C. Slagle, 80, died peacefully on Jan. 14, 2003 at his home. He was born the son of Calvin and Ethel Mae Chamberlin Slagle on Aug. 31, 1922 in Kane, Pa. He was self-employed, owning and operating J.C. Slagle Inc. in Henrietta. He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving from 1942 to 1945 and also receiving the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife Constance; and his children, Darlene (Lance) Thrall, John (Christine) Slagle, Bruce (Pamela) Slagle, Karen (Jeff) Willison and Connie Slagle, his loving caregiver; grandchildren, Lori (Brian) Pizzini, John T. and Mark Slagle, Jeffrey and Ashley Willison, Lindsay, Brett, Madison and Aidan Slagle; great grandchildren, Samantha and Austin Pizzini; sister Dorothy (Sherwood) Fleming; and also many longtime fishing buddies. No prior calling. Friends attended his memorial service Saturday at the Pinnacle Lutheran Church 250 Pinnacle Road, Henrietta. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make memorial contributions to the Genesee Region Home Care Hospice or to C.U.R.E. in his name. Arrangements by the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc. in Livonia.

Carol Jo Wright

Carol Jo Wright, 55, died Jan. 14, 2003 at Teresa House Hospice in Geneseo after a long illness. Miss Wright was born on March 18, 1947 in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Dr. Wilbur H. Wright and Florence (Stoll) Wright. She was a graduate of SUNY Geneseo and a member of the Avon United Methodist Church Women's Association. She worked in the health care field for many years. She was predeceased by her mother Florence Wright. She is survived by her father, Dr. Wilbur H. (Lucille) Wright of Geneseo; sisters, Susan (Otto) Kenney of Geneseo, Jan (Richard) Bailey of Hyde Park, Vt., Judy (George) Minor of Ontario, Canada; niece and family, Sandra, Chris and Jason Owings of Memphis, Tenn.; and many close friends. Memorial Services were held at the Avon United Methodist Church in Avon with Rev. Larry Beman officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Avon United Methodist Church, 130 Genesee St., Avon NY 14414 or the Teresa House, 21 Highland Rd., Geneseo NY 14454 in her memory. Arrangements by the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc. in Avon.
