In Memoriam

John T. Barrett

Former chairman of Geneseo Theatre Dept.

John T. Barrett died Feb. 2, 2004, at the age of 88. His wife of 55 years, Wyllis Wiegman Barrett survives at their home in Pittsford. Former chairman of the Department of Theatre at SUNY Geneseo, Dr. Barrett was also a frequent director for Geneseo Community Players. He had previously taught at Marietta College (Ohio), Western Michigan at Kalamazoo, Brock University (Canada) and SUNY Binghamton. In addition to studying at the Universities of Illinois and Chicago he received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern, his masters from Columbia and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His longtime interest in the popular Italian Renaissance Commedia del Arte led to extensive periods of research throughout Italy and influenced his direction of many comedies. While theatre was his primary interest he was also knowledgeable in numerous related areas, particularly dance, music and film. Additionally, because of early training and interest in the sciences Barrett was a member of the metalurgy laboratory team for the Manhattan Project during World War II. Both gourmet cooks, Dr. Barrett and his wife were popular Geneseo hosts. After 32 years in Geneseo, the Barretts moved to Pittsford two years ago. Those wishing to donate in his memory may contribute to the Geneseo Foundation (SUNY Geneseo) for the John Barrett Scholarship in Theatre.
