Rev. Eugene H. McFarland

Rev. Eugene H. McFarland, 89, died March 1, 2007 at the Sisters of Mercy Independent Living for Seniors in Rochester where he had been a resident since July 2006. Father McFarland was previously a resident at Chapel Oaks on Portland Ave. in Rochester. He is survived by one sister Roni Hanna of Florida; two nieces, Patty (Mike) Strife of Carthage, N.Y., Eileen (Chris) Shilling of Kentucky; one nephew Robert (Kathy) Hanna and their children, Emily and Robert Jr., great nephews Mark Cerroni and Russell Strife. He was preceded in death by his brother Bart McFarland and great nehew Captain Michael Cerroni, USMC. He was born Aug. 15, 1917 in Rochester the son of Eugene and Gertrude Howe McFarland. Father McFarland attended immaculate Conception School, St. Andrew's Seminary School and received his Bachelor of Arts from St. Bernard's Seminary School. He was ordained in the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester in 1943. In 1953 he was appointed Diocesan Youth Director and served in that capacity until 1965. He served various parishes in the Rochester area, most notably St. Patrick's Church in Macedon from 1965 until 1988 when he retired. He then went to St. Mary's Church in Geneseo where he served as Priest in Residence from 1988 until 2001. During his 60 years of service to the Diocese of Rochester, Father McFarland has held many other appointments including chaplain of the Rochester Red Wings, chaplain of the Rochester Post Office Holy Name Society and was Director of Camp Stella Maris on Conesus Lake. He is an honorary member of St. Joseph's Hospital Nurses Alumni in Elmira. Father McFarland's Funeral Liturgy was held at St. Mary's Church in Geneseo on March 5 with Bishop Matthew H. Clark presiding. Burial, St. Anne's Cemetery in Palmyra, N.Y. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 1437 Blossom Rd., Rochester NY 14610. Arrangements by Rector-Hicks Funeral Home in Geneseo.
