"We don't make a lot of money, but we sure have fun."

In the winter of 1989 longtime friend Bob Savage told me he was thinking of starting a local newsapaper to replace the old Livonia Gazette. He invited me to write an occasional column on local sports history and I can proudly say that my byline appeared in the second issue of the Clarion.

My meanderings appeared in a few issues in 1989, but it wasn't until February 1990 that I officially joined the staff. My first assignment for the paper was to man the outpost known as "The Clarion-WYSL Geneseo News Bureau."

That little hole-in-the-wall office located in the former Dwyer Insurance Agency is now home to Howard Appell. The foyer of that room is now our circulation office, manned by the Clarion's most-senior employee John Woolston.

My stint with the paper has seen us move from the WYSL studios in Lakeville to Avon and now to our current location at 38 Main Street in Geneseo. I've had the privilege of working with some great people.

Livingston County has always been my home. I'm a fourth-generation resident of Livonia. My ancestors came to this county from Vermont in the late 1700s or early 1800s. And one thing I can truly say about this area is there has always been a feeling of family about it. We may disagree with the folks from Lima or Avon or Caledonia, but when push comes to shove, we're all Livingstonians.

From the ice storm to WalMart to the Akzo wars the Clarion was right there. And whatever concerns the county in the next decade I hope we'll still be there to present the true local slant on the issues.

I worked in Rochester for 23 years. People used to ask why I didn't move to the city from Hemlock. And I'd tell them, "All you've got to do is see how peaceful and lovely those hills surrounding Hemlock Lake are and you'll realize why I don't want to leave." It's home.

And that's the way I feel about the Clarion. I've been here from the start. It too, is home. And as the fellow says, "We don't make a lot of money, but we sure have fun."
