A great place to learn the ropes

There was no better place than the Clarion and Livingston County for a young reporter to learn the ropes. My "beat" was unlimited, and I had the opportunity to write about politics, sports, the arts and just interesting folks in the community. Corrin the Boss Man was pretty accepting of my quirks, and God knows we had to be pretty open-minded about his (hee hee).

I'll never forget interviewing the author Nicholson Baker, then of Mt. Morris. Nor will I forget writing a story about my bizarre friend Scotty and his passion for the "new" sport of snowboarding. I'll always remember Corrin giving me the low-down on the political intrigue of any given situation before I attended a local meeting. ("All right, Kingston is going to say this, and Hatheway is going to say that. Don't forget to ask them about the other.")

It was one of the most fun-loving groups of people I've ever worked with. Georgia Mullen was (and is) an amazing talent, a very hard worker, and taught me a great deal about journalism. Terry Proctor always supplied comic relief. It was always fun to jerk the chains of my conservative counterparts, Terry and Corrin.

I offer my deepest thanks to the Clarion for my first job out of college, and wish the paper and its staff all the best in the future.
