I always looked forward to Monday

I first saw The Clarion sitting on the checkout counter at CVS in East Avon in May 1989 (please don't cut this, Corrin, even though CVS has never advertised). The clerk said, "Take one. It's a new paper. They're free." So I did.

I took it home, glanced through it and thought, "This is just what I need to get back into journalism." I'd been home with my kids for 11 years and my youngest was ready for all-day kindergarten. There was no better time than now!

I sent a resume, was interviewed and hired (this was pre-Corrin and gave me the seniority that I never failed to lord over him). I wrote news and feature stories for The Clarion for four years, grew in knowledge of Livingston County, and was continually amazed by the talent and intelligence of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Then, one summer day in 1992 Corrin said, "Let's start a magazine." I said, "OK," and Genesee Country debuted in March 1993 with me as editor. Although I had little involvement with the newspaper after that, I now had all of western New York to write about.

The magazine became my true love and I fussed over it. Of course, Corrin and I regularly disagreed on just about all aspects of the magazine, but eventually those fireworks turned out a better product.

Clarion Publications gave me the opportunity to do something I loved and get paid for it (I won't comment on how little). I worked with smart, enthusiastic writers, artists and photographers, and I was never bored. I always looked forward to Monday morning. And now I feel kind of sad that it's over.
