Elizabeth
WadsworthLily of the Valley (continued) Charles James MurrayThe next's
day's journey was by camel to Ramses II's Temple of Abu Simbel. Charles assured
his beloved that she surpassed even Nefertiti as the most radiant queen to visit
the historic place. In Elizabeth's honor, Charles ordered that Wadsworth, Geneseo,
N.Y., 1851 be engraved near the temple's left entrance. In May 1992,
Geneseo photographer Lynn Airel visited the temple. As she developed her photographs,
Airel was astounded to see Wadsworth graffiti on the temple. After enlargement,
there was little doubt that Lord Charles had defaced the temple to record his
love for dear Elizabeth. If you would like to see the photograph she

returned to official duties, and Elizabeth, then 36, became pregnant in spring
1851. Charles James Murray was born in December 1851, but complications, thought
to be post partum fever, developed. Elizabeth lingered for a week, deliriously
insisting that she be buried beside Charles on his Scottish estate. During her
final moments, husband and wife repeated the Lord's Prayer until "Thy will
be done" stilled her last breath. 4 Back
